The new website provides citizens with access to files for over 4,600 street names in Barcelona, including detailed historical information, context for the names, and advanced search tools. This update addresses the need to renovate the previous portal, created 20 years ago, to improve its functionality and accessibility.
The platform allows users to discover not only the origin of street names but also the social, cultural, and democratic history they represent. Improvements include the ability to consult the year of approval for street names, their routes, photographs, and exact locations on the city map. Obtaining street name change certifications for administrative procedures has also been enabled.
Additionally, the website offers a direct channel for inquiries and proposals for new names to the Secretariat of the Nomenclature Committee, streamlining communication management with citizens.
This nomenclature review is part of the City Council's Strategic Plan for Memory Policies 2026-2030, aiming to incorporate democratic memory criteria, a gender perspective, and visibility for historically underrepresented groups. The nomenclature is considered a map of collective memory, reflecting the values and references a society chooses to preserve, promoting an active policy of feminization and visibility for groups such as the LGTBI community.
