The public operator TMB will reinforce Barcelona Metro Line L5 with an additional train starting in April to manage the surge in passengers fleeing the ongoing Rodalies regional rail crisis.

The blue line will see its capacity expanded during the busiest morning period. Laia Bonet, president of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona, confirmed that adding one more convoy to the current 37 will allow for a frequency of 2 minutes and 24 seconds between 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM.

"The metro network is absorbing this increase in trips well, but we are aware that in some sections of the network it is having a significant impact."

This update, scheduled for after Easter, is part of a broader plan to strengthen the network. TMB is also working on adding a train to Line 1 during morning peak hours. These improvements follow infrastructure upgrades completed in 2024 between Cornellà and Collblanc stations.
In 2025, the Barcelona metro set a new record with 480 million validations, a 2.4% increase. Lines L1 and L5 remain the backbone of the city's transit system, carrying more than half of all subway passengers.
