The Barcelona local police cleared the city's largest homeless settlement in Zona Franca this Tuesday for health reasons, sparking a political row over the lack of social alternatives.

The police operation, carried out on Street Number 2 in the Zona Franca district, affected approximately 200 people living in tents. According to the Barcelona City Council, the intervention was necessary for cleaning and pest control, although residents were told they could return once the work is completed.

"They clean and evict the rats, but they invite the people to stay."

Jordi Martí Galbis · Leader of Junts municipal group
Jordi Martí Galbis from Junts per Barcelona described the move as a publicity stunt lacking real substance. Meanwhile, ERC labeled the measure a 'patch' that fails to address structural homelessness, and the Comuns criticized the Pla Endreça for simply displacing vulnerable people without offering housing solutions.

"The fake eviction highlights Collboni's lack of authority."

Daniel Sirera · Leader of PP municipal group
The People's Party (PP), led by Daniel Sirera, demanded stricter controls and the identification of residents to prevent illegal activities. Finally, Vox accused Mayor Jaume Collboni of being ineffective as the number of settlements in Barcelona has grown to 62 locations across the city.
