The Barcelona Prosecutor's Office has instructed its new unit specializing in crimes against vulnerable groups to open investigation proceedings against the emeritus professor of the University of Barcelona, Ramon Flecha. This decision follows the university opening an internal investigation into conduct involving sexual harassment, psychological coercion, mistreatment, and exploitation linked to Flecha and his research group, the CREA.
This specialized section, which includes prosecutors who handled high-profile cases such as the Guardia Urbana crime (Félix Martín) and the Dani Alves case (Elisabeth Jiménez), will collaborate with a team from the Mossos d'Esquadra. The officers specialize in sexual assaults and sectarian organizations, as reported by the Barcelona Provincial Prosecutor's Office.
The University of Barcelona sent a preliminary report to the Prosecutor's Office, despite not having concluded its internal investigation. The report already suggested the existence of a "high-control coercive group." Sixteen individuals had denounced Flecha for engaging in sexual relations "in a context of clear hierarchical inequality" with students, scholarship holders, or subordinates.
The CREA group recalled that the UB had previously sent similar complaints to the Prosecutor's Office in 2004 and 2016, both of which were archived. The group is confident that the same outcome will occur, asserting that they possess "abundant documents that would prove the falsity of the statements made by the anonymous accusers".
