The Department of Health confirmed that the woman was identified as a contact by the Centre for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES). Her location was initially difficult to trace due to a seat change on the plane where they both coincided.
According to the established protocol, the woman will complete quarantine at the hospital for a period of three to six weeks, which corresponds to the incubation period of hantavirus. This measure is taken to prevent interaction with other people, unlike other contacts who traveled on a cruise affected by the outbreak.
“"The contact of a contact is not a contact; people who have interacted with her should have no concerns."
The assistant director of Hospital Clínic explained that a blood and saliva PCR test will be performed on the patient, with results expected within 24 hours. He emphasized that the woman's exposure to the virus was very low, as she was two or three rows away from the infected person. Additional contact tracing will only be carried out if the PCR results are positive.
This is the second close contact of hantavirus detected in Catalonia. Previously, a South African passenger on the plane, who spent a week in Barcelona, was also identified. However, health authorities determined that her time in the city was during the non-infectious incubation period, and she has since returned to her country in good health.
Catalan health authorities have issued a message of calm to the public, assuring that there is no evidence of community transmission or any risk to citizens. The Barcelona City Council has also activated preventive epidemiological surveillance protocols, coordinating with the Public Health Agency of Barcelona.
