Barcelona City Council has closed a historic agreement with the State to assume the free management of 62.8 hectares of its coastline, specifically 5.2 kilometers of coast.

This pact, officially announced, grants the council direct management of a continuous stretch ranging from the Barceloneta area, near Pepe Rubianes street, to the border with Sant Adrià de Besòs. This area includes diverse spaces such as Port Olímpic and the Fòrum zone, marking a new phase in the management of the city's waterfront.
The agreement modifies the delimitation of the maritime-terrestrial zone established in 2009 and consolidates the municipal administration's role in managing a coastline that has been in constant transformation since the 1992 Olympic Games. The 62.8 hectares ceded include 354,000 square meters of green areas, 206,500 of roads, and 68,200 of public facilities, which will now directly depend on the municipality for their maintenance and conservation.
The transfer has been achieved after almost 20 years of discussions between administrations and includes the condition that these lands will not be used for profitable purposes. However, existing economic activities, such as the shopping center, nightclubs, and AEMET facilities, as well as properties previously sold by the State, will be respected.

"This historic agreement strengthens the city's capacity to decide on its own maritime facade."

Jaume Collboni · Mayor of Barcelona

"It is an operation that brings management closer to the administration most directly affected by the territory."

Arcadi España · Minister of Finance
This news comes shortly after it was announced that the Generalitat de Catalunya will also acquire the Tres Xemeneies del Besòs, in Sant Adrià de Besòs, to develop the Catalunya Media City project, an audiovisual and digital hub.
