The Deputy Mayor for Prevention and Security, Albert Batlle, detailed that the new locations include areas such as El Born, the Bunkers del Carmel, the Olympic Ring, Encants, and Parc de Pegaso. This measure is part of the municipal plan to strengthen security and combat crime and anti-social behavior.
Parc de Pegaso, which will receive 19 new devices, was the scene of a murder in July, an incident investigators linked to youth gangs. However, Batlle clarified that the installation of cameras in this area was already planned.
The remaining cameras will be distributed among the Born promenade (nine devices), the Bunkers del Carmel (eleven), the Olympic Ring (thirty), and the Bellcaire fair and Fort Pienc (thirty). These locations have been identified by police services as sensitive areas for security, coexistence, and managing large gatherings of people.
The cameras will serve a dual purpose: acting as a preventive and deterrent element against criminal or anti-social behavior, and facilitating investigations and evidence collection in the event of crimes or serious incidents.
This plan aligns with the council's objective of reaching 660 devices by 2027, covering approximately 5.16% of public space. Currently, the city already has 186 operational cameras. The system will not incorporate facial recognition or artificial intelligence-based identification technologies, and image management will comply with current data protection regulations.
