Barcelona City Council is set to tender a new maintenance and repair contract for the city's traffic light network, valued at an estimated 34 million euros.

The contract will cover the period from 2026 to 2028, with a possible two-year extension. It includes the upkeep of nearly 40,000 traffic lights across 1,805 intersections, ensuring road safety and mobility efficiency for both drivers and pedestrians.
Key technical upgrades include the installation of fiber optic connected regulators and the maintenance of 13,572 signals adapted for the visually impaired. The plan also incorporates 81 new anti-terrorist bollards and the replacement of obsolete electrical equipment.
Since 2024, all traffic lights in Barcelona have utilized LED technology. This transition has significantly reduced energy consumption from 46,000 kWh per day in 2001 to just 10,000 kWh today, marking a major step in urban sustainability.
