The Barcelona City Council plans to make smoke detectors mandatory in all new construction homes starting in 2027, a measure that will also be extended to 12,000 existing public housing units in the city.

This initiative, announced by Mayor Jaume Collboni, is part of an update to the fire prevention ordinance. The processing of the regulatory modification will begin this year with the aim of it coming into force and being fully applied in 2027.
Beyond the new regulation, the city council will also issue a general recommendation to all citizens who do not yet have a smoke detector in their homes to install one.

"It is an affordable measure, costing a maximum of 20 euros, easy to install, and triggers an alarm to alert neighbors or the person living in the home to notify firefighters."
