Barcelona's Bicing service will celebrate its 20th anniversary in March 2027 with a solid base of 170,052 subscribers as of June, according to data from B:SM. This figure represents an increase of 6,354 users compared to early 2025. The average utilization stands at 7.8 uses per bicycle daily.
Currently, the fleet comprises 8,000 bicycles (5,000 electric and 3,000 mechanical). Mayor Jaume Collboni has announced that the fleet will reach 12,000 bicycles in the next term. New contract specifications will be put out to tender this autumn, aiming for them to enter service by the end of 2028, coinciding with the municipal government's intention to phase out shared bicycle services due to coexistence issues.
In June, 1,885,714 uses were recorded, and in the first six months of the year, accumulated uses approached 12 million. Each trip lasts an average of 12.46 minutes. Monthly, each vehicle covers 584.3 kilometers, and approximately 280 bicycles are repaired. As of the end of 2024, the majority of subscribers were men aged between 25 and 44, with an average age of 37.29.
The city has 557 stations, although this is still below the target of exceeding 600 stations set for last year. The most used stations are Ciutat de Granada, 168 (840 uses/day), Tuset, 19 (748 uses/day), and Provença, 388-390 (723 uses/day).
The service began on March 22, 2007, with 13 stations and 200 vehicles. The following year, it already had 4,000 bicycles and 286 stations. By 2009, it reached 182,000 users, but in 2010, it saw a decline to 117,000, attributed to maintenance issues, rapid expansion, and system failures.
Some users point to current problems such as a lack of available bicycles, bikes with depleted batteries or only operational front brakes, poor distribution between stations, and defects like loose pedals or detached seats.
Bicing offers two tariffs: a flat rate of 50 euros annually for frequent users (with free use of mechanical bikes for the first 30 minutes and €0.40 for electric ones) and a usage-based tariff of 35 euros annually for occasional use (with additional costs of €0.40 for mechanical and €0.63 for electric bikes for the first 30 minutes).
