AENA authorities deactivated the general alarm at El Prat airport on Thursday, January 15, after a Turkish Airlines flight made an emergency landing due to a false bomb threat created by a passenger.

The incident began around 10:00 AM when a passenger on flight TK1853 (Istanbul-Barcelona) created an internet access point (hotspot) with a network name containing an explosive threat. Necessary air safety procedures were immediately activated, including the Aerocat plan alert by Protecció Civil.

The airline adds that the process was carried out in accordance with international air safety standards.

Sources from the Ministry of Defense confirmed that a French combat aircraft was authorized to enter Spanish airspace to support the emergency landing. The plane finally landed around 11:00 AM in a secure area, away from the terminals.
After the passengers were evacuated, the Guardia Civil confirmed the negative result of the checks. Although the threat has been ruled out, the investigation remains open to determine authorship. Turkish Airlines has initiated legal proceedings to identify the responsible passenger.
