The Department of Territory has commissioned new feasibility studies through the public company Ifercat to revive the Transversal Railway Axis project in Catalonia during 2026.

This infrastructure project, originally designed in the early 2000s, aims to connect Lleida and Girona with a branch to Barcelona starting from Igualada. Despite being approved in 2009, economic constraints led to the plan being shelved for over a decade.
The updated design focuses on current demand and cost-efficiency. The plan features a hybrid system allowing passenger trains to reach 250 km/h and freight trains to travel at 150 km/h, aiming to decrease heavy truck traffic on regional highways.
Success depends on support from the Ministry of Transport. Historically, PSOE and PP governments have prioritized radial networks centered in Madrid. Minister Óscar Puente recently highlighted improvements for the Barcelona-Madrid line and new stations in El Prat de Llobregat.
