Catalan PP distances itself from Albiol's tourist apartment ban in Badalona

The party attributes the move to local circumstances while maintaining its general opposition to market restrictions.

The Mayor of Badalona, Xavier García Albiol, has announced a total ban on tourist apartments in the city, marking a significant departure from the People's Party (PP) national platform.

The PP leadership in Catalonia has described the move as a response to the 'singularities' of Badalona. Despite the party's history of challenging such regulations in court, spokesperson Juan Fernández emphasized that Albiol is acting in the best interest of his constituents to prevent a spillover effect from neighboring Barcelona.
This local policy is enabled by a Catalan Government decree that allows municipalities to cancel existing licenses after a five-year period. Badalona will be the first major city governed by the PP in Spain to implement such a restrictive measure against holiday rentals.
