The Catalan Parliament approved a significant increase in the tourist tax this Wednesday, set to take effect on April 1st, with major changes for Barcelona.

The new legislation, backed by PSC, ERC, and Comuns, aims to double the tax revenue from 100 to 200 million euros annually. In Barcelona, the municipal surcharge could rise to 8 euros, meaning luxury hotel guests might pay up to 15 euros per night by 2029. Other Catalan municipalities will see a 50% increase starting in 2026, reaching the full 100% hike by 2027.
Funds collected will be split, with 25% dedicated to housing policies and 75% allocated to the Tourism Promotion Fund. The law also introduces flexibility for local councils to adjust rates based on high or low seasons and specific postal codes to manage tourist flow.
