The Catalan Parliament approved a significant increase in the tourist tax this Tuesday, a measure that will see rates double in Barcelona starting April 1st, 2026.

The reform was supported by PSC, ERC, and Comuns, aiming to increase annual revenue to 200 million euros. A quarter of these funds is earmarked for social housing, while 75% will support tourism management and diversification programs. Opposition parties like Junts and PP voted against the bill, citing concerns over competitiveness.
In Barcelona, luxury hotel stays will see the regional tax rise from 3.5 to 7 euros per night. When combined with municipal surcharges, visitors could pay between 11 and 15 euros total. Tourist apartments will be taxed at 4.5 euros, while other regions in Catalonia will see a 50% increase in 2026, reaching 100% by 2027.

"This measure helps distribute wealth in a community with more tourism than ever."

David Cid · Member of Parliament (Comuns)
The new law also grants other municipalities the power to implement local surcharges of up to 4 euros. These additional costs will vary based on location—such as coastal or inland areas—and seasonal demand, providing local councils with more control over tourism impact.
