Analyses conducted at the Baix Llobregat and Besòs treatment plants show a worrying trend. Records have jumped from 300-400 milligrams to levels approaching 1 gram per 1,000 inhabitants per day. This data places the metropolitan area in the high range of consumption across the continent.
The study, which monitors 115 cities in 25 countries, indicates that consumption is not consistent throughout the week. While figures remain around 800 mg from Monday to Friday, a significant spike occurs during the weekend. The peak is reached on Sundays, exceeding 1,200 mg, directly linking the increase to Saturday night nightlife.
According to the National Institute of Toxicology, a standard dose of cocaine is around 250 mg, a figure that helps scale the magnitude of the residues found in the sewage system. Spain remains one of the hotspots for consumption in Western Europe, sharing similar levels with certain regions in Canada.
