The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, advocated this Wednesday for the regulation of burqa use in public areas, aligning with the recent debate opened by the Government of Catalonia.

In an interview with RTVE, the mayor expressed his disapproval of the garment, describing it as a denial of women's identity. However, Jaume Collboni suggested that a total ban might not achieve the intended goal of ensuring women's freedom of choice.

"I do not like the burqa; it is a way of denying a woman's identity. The goal is for women to have the ability to decide freely."

This local stance follows comments from the Catalan Government spokesperson, Sílvia Paneque, who called for a serious discussion on the matter. Meanwhile, the Spanish Congress recently rejected a proposal to ban full-face veils nationwide.
