The Irídia Centre has filed a complaint with the hate crimes prosecutor's office against the mayor of Badalona, Xavier García Albiol, following an Instagram post.

The complaint is based on a social media post in which the mayor shared the image of a person arrested for a snatch-and-grab theft from an elderly person. In the message, Albiol mentioned the detainee's nationality and called him "human scum," adding that he would "send him back swimming to Morocco".
According to the complaint, these expressions could constitute a crime of incitement to hatred against a group based on their nationality. The organization requests the prosecutor's office to open an urgent investigation into the matter.
The complainants consider the dissemination of such messages particularly dangerous, as it can fuel dehumanizing discourse and precede episodes of violence against individuals or groups targeted for their origin. They also criticize Albiol for sharing the detainee's image and deem his statements irresponsible.

The prosecutor's office will now decide whether to accept the complaint and open investigative proceedings to analyze the mayor's potential criminal liability.
