The citizen consultation, held between May 8 and July 3, concluded with a significant majority in favor of the change. The proposed name, Verdum, received 429 votes, while the current name, Verdun, which references a World War I battle, garnered 118 votes. The new name, Verdum, refers to a bird deeply rooted in the neighborhood.
This consultation, open to residents over fourteen years old registered in the neighborhood, is non-binding. However, the Nou Barris district will initiate the procedures to propose the name change to the plenary of the Barcelona City Council, located in Plaça de Sant Jaume.
The neighborhood's name has a history of changes over the past century. Land sale documents from a hundred years ago already show the use of both names. During the Franco regime, Verdun was imposed, but in 1984, Verdum was reinstated with the city's division into districts. However, in 2006, Verdun was adopted again. In recent years, the neighborhood association has pushed for the return to Verdum, having already organized a consultation in 2023 that also voted in favor of this option.
This may not be the only neighborhood name change in Barcelona. In the Navas neighborhood, within the Sant Andreu district, a participatory process is also being considered to change its designation. An initial proposal was to name it Torrent de la Guineu, a local toponym, but neighborhood positions are divided among different options.
