The mayor considers the current moment ideal to bring this measure back to the table, which was previously rejected at the municipal plenary session. As he explained, the goal is to focus government action on city issues after having moved past stages of political negotiation.
The proposal, which was debated nearly a year ago, did not succeed at that time due to a vote against it by Junts. Back then, the decision caused tensions with the Security Department, which criticized the stalling of the regulation.
“"As a government, we have extended our hand to reach agreements primarily with progressive groups, but we have also made very important agreements with Junts; therefore, I hope that now that we have passed this stage, we can focus again on the city."
The municipal government argues that electric stun guns function as a preventive system already used by other police forces, such as the Mossos d'Esquadra. The local executive maintains that the Guàrdia Urbana needs to strengthen its security mechanisms and finds no reason to exclude this tool from its arsenal.
