Tarragona's People's Party has highlighted the lack of execution of the Ebro Delta Protection Plan, approved in 2021, arguing that the Spanish Government's announced actions are insufficient and do not address the ecosystem's vulnerability.

Congresswoman for the People's Party, Elisa Vedrina, criticized this Friday from La Ràpita that the Plan for the Protection of the Ebro Delta is not being effectively implemented. Vedrina emphasized the importance of this ecosystem, considered one of the most fragile and valuable on the Mediterranean coast, with significant environmental, agricultural, social, and economic relevance, yet facing considerable unresolved vulnerability.
According to the Tarragona-based congresswoman, the central government's responses to inquiries about the plan's status do not reveal the actual execution progress. Vedrina points out that general actions for the entire Ebro basin, such as SAIH or Ebro Resilience, are included, but their direct link to the Delta's specific protection is questionable. "They give us figures for the entire basin to hide that almost nothing is reaching the Delta specifically," she denounced, calling it "the Government's policy: announcing a lot and responding little."
Furthermore, the government's response overlooks actions by other bodies responsible for the coastline, presenting a partial view of the plan. Vedrina highlighted the absence of the Directorate General of Coasts and the Sea in the provided information. Executed actions so far have been limited to maintenance sand nourishment and an emergency intervention on Buda Island after storms, while a new phase of the plan remains stalled in environmental processing with no set date.

"These are patches, not a strategy. The major structural actions that the Delta needs to face coastal erosion and storms continue to be absent. There is a lack of massive sediment supply that would truly shield the coastline, and the Government does not talk about this."

Vedrina concluded that "every day that passes, the Delta continues to lose land, and Sánchez continues without a real strategy to protect it." Faced with this inaction, she stated that when Alberto Núñez Feijóo becomes President of the Spanish Government, the Delta will have an effective plan, with investments and budget, "not a slogan."
