The Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime (LOREG) stipulates that municipal elections are held on the fourth Sunday of May every four years, placing the date for the next elections in Barcelona on Sunday, May 23, 2027. This date cannot be brought forward or changed unless the law is amended. The official call, through a Royal Decree, will be made on Monday, March 29, 2027, 55 days before election day.
All Spanish citizens registered in the electoral roll of Barcelona, as well as citizens of the European Union residing in the city, will be able to exercise their right to vote. Additionally, thanks to reciprocity agreements between the Spanish Government and other non-EU countries, citizens from those territories living in Barcelona will also be able to vote.
The organization of municipal elections falls to the city councils, under the supervision of the Spanish Government. The LOREG also determines the number of councilors each municipality is entitled to based on its population. Due to population growth, it is expected that the citizens of Barcelona will elect 43 councilors, two more than in the current term. This figure was also seen during the first four mandates of democracy, up until 1995.
