The Barcelona City Police and Mossos d'Esquadra launched an operation this March 25 to evict two shanty settlements located in the La Sagrera neighborhood.

The action took place on Adif property near the Treball Digne bridge. According to local sources, between 200 and 300 people were living in the settlement. Social services from CUESB were deployed to assist those displaced by the police action.
Authorities stated the eviction was mandatory following a Barcelona Fire Department report highlighting an imminent and severe risk to life. This safety concern was heightened after a fire occurred in the area earlier this month.

"They were only notified as they were already being evicted."

Housing rights groups have condemned the move by Jaume Collboni's administration, claiming the eviction aims to remove poverty from the urban landscape rather than addressing safety concerns.
