FME Begins Academic Year with Tribute to John Tukey

The Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics at UPC dedicates its opening ceremony to the figure of statistician and data analysis pioneer John Tukey.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics (FME) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) begins the 2026-2027 academic year on October 14th in Barcelona with an event dedicated to the figure of statistician John Tukey.

The event, held in the faculty's Auditorium (C. Pau Gargallo, 14) from 12:30 to 14:00, pays tribute to John Tukey, recognized as a pioneer in exploratory data analysis and for coining terms like 'bit' and 'software'.
The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Kiko Llaneras, a Doctor of Engineering and data journalist for the newspaper El País. Llaneras will share his insights on current statistical applications and the value of data in contemporary society.
The event is open to the entire university community of the UPC.
