The Fundació Roure and the Barcelona City Council are promoting the Viure i Conviure program, an initiative that provides free accommodation for students in Barcelona in exchange for accompanying seniors over 65.

This social project addresses two major issues: unwanted loneliness among the elderly and the housing crisis for young people. Data from SoledadES shows that 20% of people over 75 suffer from loneliness, while CIS reports that housing is the top concern for 30% of those aged 25 to 34.

"The project aims to promote and facilitate solidary relationships and intergenerational mutual aid."

Participants must follow basic rules, such as spending at least six nights a week at the senior's home and arriving by 10:30 PM. There is no financial exchange involved, as the program focuses on social interaction and shared living during the academic year in Barcelona.
In 2024, the program recorded 102 active households involving nearly 200 students. Seniors must be autonomous, as the students' role is to provide company rather than professional caregiving or medical assistance.
