Junts deputy Glòria Freixa is considering running in the party's primaries to become the candidate for mayor of Barcelona, following Josep Rius's withdrawal.

Glòria Freixa, first secretary of the Parliament's Bureau, has stated that she is "very seriously" considering the possibility of running in the primaries that Junts will open on June 1st to select the candidate for mayor of Barcelona in the upcoming municipal elections. In a conversation with TOT Barcelona, Freixa confirmed she met with the party's secretary general, Jordi Turull, who informed her that primaries would be held if there were more than one candidate and that she had "an open door".
This decision comes after Jordi Martí Galbis, Junts's leader in the City Council, announced his intention to be the candidate. The situation became more complex on Monday with the withdrawal of Josep Rius, who was the preferred contender for Carles Puigdemont and the party leadership. Rius expressed on social media that "in a logic of internal confrontation and division, you will not find me there."
Lawyer Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas, who had previously expressed his willingness to be a candidate, has advocated for open primaries, stating that "it would make no sense if there were more than one candidate for it to be a hierarchical decision." Sources close to former Economy Minister Jaume Giró have also indicated that he is leaving the door open to run, recalling the proposal made to him by Puigdemont in 2022.
Glòria Freixa explained that her consideration has changed following Josep Rius's withdrawal, as now "they opened the door." She advocates for the need for renewal in the candidacy and noted that Jordi Turull has also met with other potential contenders, such as former Health Minister Josep Maria Argimon.
Born in Barcelona in 1969, Freixa holds a law degree and has been a deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia since 2018. She was the 10th candidate for Barcelona on the Junts list led by Puigdemont in 2024. Her connection to the city dates back to her presidency of the territorial board of Òmnium Cultural in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
Junts's primary process will begin on June 1st, and the final candidate is expected to be known on June 21st, following the membership's vote. Aspirants will need to gather 20% of endorsements before being proclaimed candidates.
