Professionals in the sector are demanding that the 0-3 stage be recognized as fully educational and are calling for a transformation of the current model to improve working conditions and the quality of care for young children.
This Thursday's call is driven by the unions CGT, La Intersindical, and ÁBACOS, along with the Revolución 0-3 movement. The day will conclude with a demonstration in Barcelona, starting at Plaça Universitat at 11 AM.
This work stoppage affects public nurseries, whether directly or indirectly managed, as well as private daycare centers, and all personnel involved in the educational care of young children.
Key demands include the immediate initiation of a reform process for the Catalan decree regulating the first cycle of early childhood education and a modification of the state education law. The organizing bodies frame this mobilization within a broader context of actions in Catalonia and across Spain.
They advocate for public, free, inclusive, and quality education, requesting more resources and professionals for this stage, which is widely considered the most neglected. Specific demands include reduced student-to-teacher ratios, increased funding for inclusive education, salary and labor improvements, an end to outsourcing and precarious employment, and the possibility of early retirement.
The CGT has warned that the current situation not only harms professionals but also compromises the quality of care for children and the guarantee of equal opportunities from the earliest years of life. They insist that the 0-3 stage should no longer be considered merely care-based, emphasizing the critical role of the first years in a person's overall development.
