The Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition highlighted that this economic injection will focus exclusively on interurban bus services, considered a
“"fundamental piece of our country's mobility map"
The increase in demand for these services, which has grown since 2019, is attributed to several factors. These include the consequences of the railway crisis that began in January, changes in citizens' travel habits, demographic growth, and the necessary decarbonization of the vehicle fleet.
The Minister emphasized that the demand for interurban buses has generated
“"20 million additional trips. Therefore, buses have become an essential service to guarantee mobility between municipalities"
This Shock Plan will prioritize lines with high occupancy, where users often have difficulty finding a seat. Routes connecting to educational, social, or health centers, as well as those serving rural and low-density population areas, will also be reinforced. Furthermore, lines parallel to saturated or under construction railway axes will be improved, positioning the interurban bus as a key alternative to rail.
The investment is justified by the increased use of public road transport, which in 2025 recorded 90 million annual passengers in Catalonia, a 10% increase over the previous year, a trend that continues in 2026. This initiative complements the first Shock Plan, which already included 10 million euros for the improvement of bus stations in Catalonia.
