Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas, known for his work as a lawyer and for having served as a Junts deputy in Congress and Parliament, has officially announced his pre-candidacy for the party's primaries in Barcelona. The deadline for submissions is this evening, making him the fourth hopeful in the race to be designated candidate for mayor in the May 2027 elections.
Speaking to El TOT Barcelona, Cuevillas emphasized the importance of the primaries focusing on the contest for the city's mayoralty, rather than becoming an internal party "pre-congress." He stated that he represents "the soul of the movement" of Junts, viewing the party as "a movement with the body of a party."
Cuevillas's decision comes after a period of speculation and following the withdrawal of other figures, such as Josep Rius, a Barcelona councilor, from the race. His pre-candidacy broadens the field of contenders, which also includes Parliament deputy Glòria Freixa and Congress deputy Pilar Calvo.
According to Junts' regulations, aspirants have six calendar days to gather 20% of the membership's endorsements. The internal campaign to secure support from party members will last seven days, during which the party leadership will remain neutral.
