Following the announcement by MP Pilar Calvo of her intention to run in the internal electoral process, and with the municipal group leader, Jordi Martí Galbis, as another official aspirant, Giró has decided not to step forward. The former minister justified his decision by stating that running for the primaries "has not been part of my plans," despite the "requests and expressions of encouragement" he has received.
Giró resigned his seat as a Member of Parliament on September 4th, citing reasons that, he claims, remain "fully valid." Nevertheless, he has expressed his wish for Junts to form a "solid" candidacy for the city of Barcelona.
The party has confirmed that Secretary General Jordi Turull has met with several interested individuals, including Giró, former minister Argimon, MP Glòria Freixa, and lawyer Jaume Alonso Cuevillas. Both Freixa and Cuevillas have expressed their interest but have not yet officially declared their candidacy.
The vice-president of Junts and councilor in Barcelona, Josep Rius, who is also close to President Puigdemont, withdrew from leading the list to avoid internal conflicts, according to a letter sent to the membership after Galbis's announcement.
The candidate selection process, which will be a primary due to the confirmation of multiple aspirants, will begin on June 1st and conclude on June 21st with an online vote. The party's regulations allow for alternative scenarios to primaries, such as direct appointment by the CMT or a vote by the assembly of members, but these options currently seem unlikely.
