Climate records from the Fabra Observatory – RACAB show an acceleration of extreme heat during June in Barcelona. The last eight years have accounted for 75% of the days exceeding 35 ºC, a milestone that was previously an exception.
Following a record-breaking spring, the start of summer has been equally intense. For over a century of data, reaching 35 ºC at the Fabra Observatory was infrequent, typically occurring between late July and mid-August. When these temperatures occur weeks earlier, it signifies an exceptional situation.
June 2026 has already recorded at least five days with maximum temperatures above 35 ºC (on the 22nd, 24th, 25th, 27th, and 28th). This figure matches the historical record set the previous year, when for the first time in over a century, five days reached this temperature in a single June.
The record could be even more significant. If the thermometer reaches 35 ºC again on June 30th, June 2026 will become an unprecedented month, setting a new historical record at the Fabra Observatory, just one year after the previous one.
