The president of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, confirmed on March 20 that the party will not join a broad left-wing front in Barcelona, opting instead to maintain its historic independent identity.

Speaking to Ser Catalunya, Junqueras addressed the recent proposal by the party's spokesperson in Madrid, Gabriel Rufián. The party leader emphasized that ERC remains the best instrument for Catalonia and should run under its own name in all upcoming elections.

"The best option is ERC, and ERC will present itself as such everywhere."

The debate follows the announcement that Gabriel Rufián will participate in an event in Barcelona on April 9 alongside Irene Montero from Podemos. Junqueras noted he was informed of the initiative shortly before it became public but chose to avoid a direct confrontation with Rufián.
Highlighting the party's 95-year history, Junqueras stated that he is not willing to dilute the party's acronyms, describing ERC as the most effective force for defending democracy and Catalan interests.
