Sources close to Jordi Martí Galbis have announced his decision, which follows his communication to Junts' Secretary General, Jordi Turull. This candidacy could complicate the aspirations of Josep Rius, Junts' vice-president and a Member of the Catalan Parliament, who has the support of the party leadership and former president Artur Mas.
Martí Galbis's potential candidacy might have the backing of former mayor Xavier Trias, who won the 2023 municipal elections. Junts' internal process, approved by the national council, requires pre-candidates to secure 20% of member endorsements. The Municipal Territorial Commission will decide how the candidate is proclaimed, although the leadership would prefer to avoid open primaries.
Martí Galbis, born in Barcelona in 1961, holds a law degree and has been a city councilor since 2011. He served as Councilor for Presidency and the Sants-Montjuïc district during Trias's term (2011-2015). He has also held significant positions in the Catalan government and the Spanish Congress of Deputies.
Throughout the current term, Martí Galbis, as head of Junts' municipal group, has reached agreements with Jaume Collboni's government, including the new Civic Ordinance and the Club Capitol project. Junts has also announced support for the new Ciutat Vella usage plan.
