These cameras feature advanced systems capable of detecting vessels, recognizing license plates, and identifying irregular activities in protected zones. The collected data is managed from the central control room of the Rural Agents, enabling more effective action against detected infringements. This technology serves as a complementary tool to traditional surveillance methods.
The installation of these devices is part of a surveillance strategy announced by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which has already conducted a pilot test with seven devices in strategic park locations. Cap de Creus was chosen as the starting point due to the increasing tourist pressure on its natural spaces, often driven by social media exposure, posing a challenge to the conservation of an environment rich in biodiversity and particularly fragile.
The Director General of Rural Agents, Elisenda Pérez Esteve, explained that the new cameras will enhance surveillance capabilities, reaching physically difficult areas without replacing agents but rather complementing their efforts to improve effectiveness.
The project is integrated into the GovTech Catalunya program, aiming to apply technological innovation to public services. The Secretary of Telecommunications and Digital Transformation, Albert Tort, highlighted the positive and ethical use of artificial intelligence for protecting natural spaces. Beyond infraction detection, these systems could also be used for wildlife monitoring and assessing visitor numbers.
