Political tension escalates in Catalonia after Junts announced the breakdown of relations with Sumar, demanding a rectification for accusations of racism and classism made by Yolanda Díaz.

The pro-independence party Junts has decided to suspend its relations with Sumar, the party led by the second vice-president of the Spanish government, Yolanda Díaz. This decision comes after Díaz, in an interview on Onda Cero last Thursday, April 16, 2026, stated that Junts has “always” been a racist and classist party, denying it any “progressive” label.
Sources from Junts have expressed their discomfort, emphasizing that in politics “not everything goes” and defending the trajectory of figures such as the secretary general, Jordi Turull, and Carles Puigdemont himself, to refute these accusations. They have also denied any negotiation with Sumar to obtain support for the automatic extension decree for rents. From the leadership of Junts, it has been suggested to Sumar that they seek the support of the Popular Party, recalling the election of the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, in 2023 with votes from the PSC, Barcelona En Comú, and the populars.

"The level of moral baseness reached by those who believe themselves morally superior is chilling. The lack of respect for the other, the lack of rigor, the recourse to manipulation exactly as Donald Trump does, perfectly describe where this disoriented left stands today…"

Carles Puigdemont · Leader of Junts and former President of the Generalitat
In a strong reaction on social media, Carles Puigdemont has compared Yolanda Díaz to former US President Donald Trump, accusing her of being populist and living off the “foundational myth of Spanish nationalism in Catalonia”. Puigdemont urged Díaz to ask the PP for votes if she needs support, and demanded respect for Junts voters, stating that the minister “does not know” the reality of his party.
