The future Barcelona Provincial Court could be operational in 2030 or 2031, as anticipated by Mayor Jaume Collboni, following years of archaeological setbacks.

The site of the former courts in Barcelona is close to seeing the completion of the future Provincial Court project. Although the first stone has not yet been laid, Mayor Jaume Collboni has predicted that the new building could be operational by 2030 or 2031, an earlier timeframe than the initial projections that pointed to 2032.
After eight years of inactivity, archaeological work resumed in March and is expected to conclude during 2028. The involved institutions — the City Council, the Ministry of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, and the Provincial Court — are working to prevent further "surprises" that could delay the project.
The Minister of Justice, Ramon Espadaler, welcomed the understanding between the parties and emphasized that justice is a "social public service." He noted that the expansion of judicial infrastructure in the city has helped "reduce the timelines for swift trials," contributing to the decongestion of the judicial system.
The site, disused since 2009, had been the subject of neighborhood demands for social uses, such as a health center or other facilities. Collboni acknowledged the "legitimacy" of these requests and stated that the new building will fulfill a "public service objective."
