Sala Parés, located on Petritxol street and recognized as the oldest continuously operating art gallery in Barcelona and the European Union, has a new owner. Businessman Jaume Sabater, founder of the investment fund Stoneweg, has acquired a majority stake. Gallery owner Joan Anton Maragall will continue to manage and direct the gallery.
This decision stems from the lack of generational succession within the Maragall family, who have led the institution for a century. The agreement arrives at a crucial time for Sala Parés as it prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2027, thus ensuring its continuity for future generations.
The institution stated in a press release that the current challenges in the art market necessitate a long-term strategy. Therefore, they sought a partner with "high aspirations, sensitivity, and respect for a long trajectory," and with genuine interest in art and the role of Sala Parés within Barcelona's cultural ecosystem.
Stoneweg, known for managing real estate assets and cultural projects such as the new Thyssen Museum Barcelona and the Palau Martorell, will maintain the current operational lines of Sala Parés. This includes commitments to the staff, artists, and the more than 40,000 annual visitors.
The new ownership plans to implement an ambitious exhibition program, continuing to focus on contemporary art from both Catalonia and abroad, while also highlighting its historical legacy. The cultural programming will also be enhanced with conferences, presentations, and concerts.
“"I am very satisfied to have found a travel companion like Jaume Sabater, a partner with whom we feel a natural and comfortable fit."
“"We intend to embark on a new era of continuity and growth to guarantee another 150 years of Sala Parés in Barcelona."
