The iconic twin fountains in Barcelona's Plaça de Catalunya have been shut down for waterproofing works, expected to last until the end of June, aiming to prevent leaks.

One year after resuming normal operation, the ornamental fountains in Plaça de Catalunya have once again ceased to function. This time, the interruption is not due to drought but to essential waterproofing works scheduled to continue until the end of June. The primary goal of this intervention is to ensure the proper functioning of the installations and to prevent detected water leakages.
The duration of the works may vary depending on their progress and weather conditions, as tasks can only be performed in dry conditions. According to information provided by the Barcelona City Council, the planned works include emptying the basins, disassembling fountain elements, sealing cracks, renovating the interior pavement, and applying a comprehensive waterproofing treatment.
It is worth noting that a comprehensive renovation of these fountains was already carried out in 2015 to improve their efficiency and lighting system. That intervention included the installation of a remote control system to monitor hydraulic elements, safety systems, energy consumption, and water quality, as well as managing the programming of light, water, and music shows.
The twin fountains, designed by Espiau Seoane and dating back to 1959, are a monumental ensemble located around the gallery of statues from the 1929 Universal Exposition. Like many other ornamental fountains in the city, they were affected by the prohibition of filling such installations with water from November 2022, when the drought alert state came into effect, restricting water use for aesthetic elements.
