The L'Hospitalet City Council approved on February 24 a strategic change to Fira 2000's statutes, enabling the municipality to use the firm as an in-house provider for local construction projects.

This administrative shift follows the May 2025 acquisition of all private shares by the Generalitat de Catalunya, making Fira 2000 a 100% public entity. The new status allows for more agile real estate development through direct public funding transfers instead of accumulating debt.

"This step will allow us to speed up procedures when building new facilities in L'Hospitalet."

David Quirós · Mayor of L'Hospitalet
The first major project under this framework will be a new music school and auditorium located in the city's Cultural District. While the PSC and ERC-EUiA supported the move, opposition parties criticized the financial relationship between the city and the Barcelona-centric trade fair structure.
Regarding the ongoing expansion of the Fira de Barcelona venue in L'Hospitalet, officials expect construction to conclude by late 2026. The new 135,000-square-meter facility is designed to host global events like the Mobile World Congress starting in 2028.
