The side of building number 1 in the Ricard Viñes square, in the upper part of the city, now features a 14-meter-wide portrait of the prestigious Lleida-born musician. Artist Oriol Arumí, based in Lleida, revealed that he had long eyed this large wall with the intention of painting Viñes there, thus creating an iconic image for the commemorative program of his 150th birth anniversary.
According to the curator of the Any Viñes, Màrius Bernadó, over 200 activities have already been held since May 2025, with a program extending into 2026 that could reach 270 events. The mayor, Fèlix Larrosa, accompanied by councilwoman Begoña Iglesias, highlighted the artwork's importance in enriching public space and fostering city pride.
Arumí explained that the choice of a 1906 photograph of Viñes was key, seeking an image from his international peak. The muralist also had to work around the facade's relief, incorporating the pianist's signature. The artwork, in brown tones reminiscent of sepia, changes its warmth depending on the daylight.
This intervention, spanning over 300 square meters, adds to Arumí's other large-scale works, having completed 127 murals in the last 15 years. Meanwhile, the 150th-anniversary commemoration continues with exhibitions, such as the one the Barcelona Music Museum is opening about Viñes's early years in Paris, and another at the Palau de la Música highlighting the pianist's connection to this historic venue, where he was the first to perform in 1908.
