The Mercat de l'Estrella, located between Pi i Margall and Providència, will be renovated in two phases without requiring closure or relocation of its 19 stalls, a decision made by the stallholders after rejecting the provisional option in Baix Guinardó.

After four and a half years of uncertainty, the Mercat de l'Estrella will finally not be temporarily relocated to the Baix Guinardó park. Instead, the demolition and reconstruction of the facility will be carried out in two phases, allowing the 19 currently operating stalls to continue their activity at the same location, in the Pi i Margall-Providència triangle.
This decision was made by the stallholders themselves, who rejected the temporary relocation alternative proposed by the Institut de Mercats (IMMB). The neighborhood platform Salvem el Parc, which opposed the relocation to Baix Guinardó park, has expressed its satisfaction, albeit cautiously, as stated by David Plaja, a representative of the neighborhood association.

"It's a controlled satisfaction, because until there is absolute certainty, we won't be sure they won't change their minds."

The unique location of the market, which consists of two independent buildings internally connected (one on Pi i Margall and the other on Providència), will facilitate the execution of the works without interruption. The IMMB has explained to the stallholders that the first phase will focus on the Providència side. The seven stalls in this section will be temporarily relocated to empty stalls on the lower floor, in the Pi i Margall building, where all activity will be concentrated. Once the works in Providència are completed, the 19 stalls will temporarily move there to allow intervention on the Pi i Margall side.

"In recent years, a building has been constructed next door and Pi i Margall has been renovated twice, so the noise will be a minor inconvenience."

Lourdes Vico · President of the stallholders
Although the definitive project has not yet been drafted, the president of the stallholders, Lourdes Vico, has indicated that discussions have taken place regarding a future market with a single floor at the Providència level for the 19 stalls. The Pi i Margall side would be designated for an entrance and a service area for loading, unloading, and waste management, similar to the basement planned for the Mercat de l'Abaceria. The uncertainty surrounding the market's future has led to half of the stalls closing in the last four years, increasing maintenance costs for the remaining ones.
