A large column of smoke surprised visitors to Montjuïc Castle on the afternoon of April 19, 2026, leading to its evacuation for safety reasons. The fire originated in nearby scrubland, in a steep and difficult-to-access area, according to municipal sources.
The blaze, which started around 5 PM, intensified in the Camí del Far area but was brought under control after 6 PM. The Barcelona City Council has confirmed that the fire is currently in its extinction phase.
To tackle the emergency, a dozen units from the Barcelona Fire Department were mobilized, including four water tenders and three command vehicles. An ambulance and the Fire Department's drone service also responded. Additionally, assistance from the Generalitat Fire Department's helicopter was requested. As a precautionary measure, in addition to the castle's evacuation, the cable car service was halted.
This incident adds to other fires recorded in the Montjuïc area in recent months, some of them in settlement zones. Authorities continue to investigate the origin and causes of this fire, with no indications yet that it may have been deliberately set.
