This initiative is part of a participatory process called 'Verdun-Verdum the letter that changes everything,' which aims to foster debate about the neighborhood's identity. The non-binding vote will allow residents to express their preference for the current name or the proposed modification.
Only Nou Barris residents aged 14 or older can participate in this online consultation, conducted through a municipal web platform. The system verifies voters' registration to ensure the legitimacy of the process. Voting began last Friday and will close on June 19.
The neighborhood's original name, Verdun, comes from one of the most significant battles of World War I. According to various local associations, the Catalan version Verdum was more commonly used in its early days. The city council has organized complementary activities, such as walks through emblematic areas and information points, with the support of the Verdum Neighborhood Association, which has been promoting this debate for years.
“"We want the residents themselves to define the identity of their neighborhood. We are doing this now because the government wants to acknowledge this concern and turn it into an opportunity for dialogue and cohesion."
Once the voting period concludes, a report will be drafted with the results and participation data to determine the final decision regarding the neighborhood's name.
