The project is part of the “Evolucionem” campaign, promoted by the CCCC to highlight how Catalan popular culture advances and renews itself without abandoning its origins. The new protective elements, the result of two years of joint work with the company NZI and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, will be tested on September 24th during various casteller events, including those for La Mercè in Barcelona and Tarragona.
The collaboration with Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, through its 3D Planning and Printing Unit, has been key to the final design and size optimization. This development was made possible by the support of the Departament de Cultura, the Area of Culture of the Diputació de Barcelona, and CaixaBank, institutions that have contributed to improving safety and innovation in the casteller world.
The new model aims to improve the helmet's fixation and adaptation to different head sizes, expanding frontal and lateral protection. It includes a semi-rigid face shield, made from the same material as the helmet, covering the eyebrows, nasal bridge, and cheekbones, and is an optional accessory designed to be compatible with helmet use.
The introduction of the new helmet will be gradual. During a transition period, the current helmet, in use since 2006 and proven effective without serious head injuries, will coexist with the new design. The CCCC does not plan an immediate withdrawal of the old helmets but rather a progressive evolution towards the new model.
