The Institut Metròpoli reported on March 17 that 24.3% of individuals living alone in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) are currently at risk of poverty.

The study on living conditions for 2024-2025 highlights that single-person households are significantly more vulnerable than those without children (12.2%). Families with children face the highest risk at 27.1%. While the overall poverty rate in the AMB decreased slightly to 19.4%, the subjective feeling of poverty has risen to 23.1%.
In Barcelona city, the poverty risk stands at 16.4%, lower than the 22.4% recorded in the rest of the metropolitan belt. Despite the lower official figures in the capital, the number of residents who feel they cannot make ends meet has jumped from 15.4% to 19.2%.
Vulnerability remains high among children under 16 (31.4%) and foreign-born residents (32.8%). The report emphasizes that social benefits play a crucial role in stability, effectively cutting the potential poverty rate from 41.6% to the current 19.4%.
