The Catalan Ombudsman, Esther Giménez-Salinas, presented a report this Wednesday revealing that 3,000 families in Catalonia have approved social housing applications but remain without a home.

The housing crisis in Barcelona and across the region is worsening. According to September 2025 data, the average wait for emergency housing is 522 days, nearly two months longer than the previous year. This delay impacts a thousand families in the Catalan capital who are forced to live in sublets or social hostels.

"Either we change the system and its efficiency, or waiting times will continue to grow. We are not talking about chimeras."

The annual report also highlights defensive bureaucracy within the administration. Giménez-Salinas criticized that health and education professionals spend 30% of their day on paperwork, while waiting lists for disability care homes have reached 5.4 years.
