The Popular Party (PP) gathered in Barcelona this Tuesday to demand an urgent reform of municipal financing, insisting that the debate must happen simultaneously with regional funding negotiations.

The Mayor of Badalona, Xavier Garcia Albiol, highlighted that many cities are currently managing hospitals and elderly care homes that are technically the responsibility of regional governments like the Generalitat. He called for financial guarantees to cover these increasing tasks.

"We are not complaining about managing them, but we ask that the competent authority compensates us for the management they do not perform."

Elías Bendodo, the party's deputy secretary for regional and local policy, claimed the central government owes 3 billion euros to local councils. He criticized Pedro Sánchez's administration for 'strangling' municipalities with new taxes, such as the waste collection levy.
The event, which also featured Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, served as a platform to position the PP as a pro-municipal party. The leadership promised that if Alberto Núñez Feijóo reaches the government, local funding reform will be a priority within his first year.
