The City Council has presented a first technical proposal to the residents of Joan Miró Park for its renovation. This document, based on the conclusions of a participatory process, aims to rethink the park from the subsoil up to create more green areas.
The proposal includes relocating elements such as sports courts and the dog area, restoring the pergola as a shaded space, and adding water features. The redistribution of spaces takes into account the existing underground parking, which limits vegetation root growth.
To improve water retention and infiltration, the subsoil will be renovated, replacing soil where vegetation has not taken root and enhancing soil conditions for new plantings. Currently, water is treated as waste, but the aim is to recover 80%.
The vegetation will also be reformulated, moving from a Mediterranean pine forest to a more diverse palette of deciduous and shrub species. Paths will be made of sand to maintain the idea of a renaturalized space, avoiding hard paving and improving existing access points.
The proposal reorganizes uses based on areas suitable for planting. On the side of Tarragona street, above the parking lot, a paved plaza will be created as a civic hub, housing the sports courts and water features. The dog area will be located in the lower part, near the courts and away from the library.
This proposal will serve as the basis for drafting the project starting in September. The park's renovation will be carried out in phases, considering areas affected by the L8 Ferrocarrils works and the future of the Firefighters' space, planned until at least 2031. The reformulation of the library is also being addressed in a parallel project.
