The failures occurred early in the morning, disrupting service throughout the day. These two incidents add to those recorded on January 26 (double failure), January 20 (hours before the Gelida accident), and one in early December. In all cases, the loss of control over circulation forces all trains to stop immediately for safety.
When monitoring of the trains is lost, all network traffic lights immediately turn red, stopping the trains wherever they are to prevent any possible risk. This safety protocol is what causes the total collapse of the service across Catalonia.
“"It must be investigated why they have not worked and if the reason is the same in all cases."
It should be noted that Adif has a duplicate emergency manager at Sants station to replace the CTC at Estació de França, but it failed to activate on any of the six occasions. The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, apologized to users and blamed Siemens, the software provider, for the incident.
The Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, has demanded the permanent presence of the Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano, in Catalonia until the system is restored. The Catalan Executive has approved the hiring of 230 additional buses to reinforce the interurban service, while train drivers maintain the strike called for February 9 to 11.
