Starting July 27th, a new distribution of interurban bus stops will be implemented on Barcelona's Diagonal Avenue, a result of collaboration between the City Council and the Department of Territory. This measure aims to optimize the corridor, which currently handles up to 1,800 daily trips, and enhance the user experience.
The intervention plans to increase the number of stops from the current 13 to 23, with new points in the Maria Cristina (8 stops total), Palau Reial (7 stops), and Zona Universitària (6 stops) areas. The stops at Pius XII will remain unchanged. The goal is to ensure no single stop accommodates more than 20 lines, reducing current congestion.
A significant portion of the new stops will utilize existing shelters and be converted into double stops. The majority of the 23 points will be double stops, allowing for the simultaneous boarding of two vehicles. This will streamline operations, reduce waiting times, and increase service efficiency.
This initiative addresses the need to improve flow and comfort due to significant demand increases observed in the first half of 2026, with notable growth in corridors such as Vilafranca del Penedès (42%) and Manresa (25%). The redistribution also aims to separate stops by corridor and operator for a clearer system for users.
Horizontal signage and information poles have already been relocated, and new shelters will be installed where necessary. This project is part of the ongoing joint work between the Generalitat and the City Council to improve interurban bus stops across the city.
